      Girls' Cross Country

Girls take part in Cross Country in their games lessons and the annual Inter House Cross Country competitions takes place in the Autumn term for years 7-9. Pupils attend a weekly Running club during the Autumn and Spring terms which incorporates runs on the school fields, Macclesfield Canal tow path and the Middlewood Way.  Girls are selected to compete in the Macclesfield and District Cross Country championships in November and also compete as Junior girls (yrs 7&8) and Inter Girls (yrs 9 & 10) teams in the ESAA Cross Country Cup competition held in Warrington.

Each year approximately 12 girls have been selected to represent Macclesfield at the Cheshire Cross Country Championships in January. Over the years several girls have qualified further to represent Cheshire at Inter Counties Cross Country events and also ESAA National Schools Cross Country Championships in March. In 2015/16 Holly Burke (yr 7)  was selected to run for Cheshire in the Inter Counties XC and Lulu Griffiths has represented Cheshire for two consecutive years in the ESAA National Schools’ Cross Country Championships held in Blackburn and Nottingham.

Both Junior Girls and Inter Girls teams annually qualify for the Regional Finals of the ESAA  Cross Country Cup competition and in 2010 and 2011, the Junior Girls teams represented the Midlands in the Schools Cup National Finals at Alnwick Castle, Northumberland and Princethorpe College, Rugby. On both occasions the teams finished in 13th and 18th position out of 24 teams from across the country and in 2011, Katie Hughes and Tanisha Orchard were individually placed in 3rd and 4th position respectively.

Cross country is a great sport for building fitness and resilience and as such compliments all the other team sports that take place at school.
