Junior Chess stars

King’s Juniors chess stars Dmitri and Daniel might only be pawn-sized, but they are king sized on the chess board.

After Dmitri, age 10, who is also the Times Sudoku under-14 champion, came second in the under-11 Association of Junior Independent Schools’ Chess Championships and Daniel, 9, came third in the under-10 event, the brilliant brace have teamed up for the Cheshire and North-Wales team.

The boys have been coached alongside other budding chess stars, including William, by seasoned chess player and King’s Chess Coach Andrew Ireland, who doubles as the manager of Sainsburys Macclesfield.

Dmitri said: “It’s great fun playing against Daniel. I’m a bit older and tend to win at the moment, but it’s always a very difficult game.” Daniel added: “I think chess players would make good generals as you have to plan your strategy in advance and lay some surprises for your opponent.”

Andrew Ireland said: “It’s wonderful to work with such bright young children who are such a pleasure to work with and whom you can see developing into extremely talented chess players.”
