Extra-Curricular Activities

The range of extra curricular activities distinguishes King's from other day schools.  We believe strongly in the development of the whole person through many and varied activities encouraging all boys to get involved.

Clubs and Societies usually meet at lunchtime though some are by necessity after school or at the weekend. There are many opportunities to join forces with the Girls’ Division e.g. through Music, Drama, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, Sailing and Orienteering.

Drama

Drama enjoys a high profile at King’s.

Boys can opt for Theatre Studies as one of their GCSE choices but in addition, large numbers participate in our theatrical productions, acting or helping backstage with stage management, sound, props and lighting.  Recent productions have included Alice, Cyrano de Bergerac, Zadig, Candide, Into the Woods and The Rivals.  Regular trips are organised to many of the North West’s theatres and to Stratford. In addition, King’s produces high quality musicals combining the musical and dramatic talents of the pupils.

Music

King’s is renowned for its excellence in Music.

A busy programme of concerts throughout the year features Full Orchestra, String Orchestra, Wind Band, Big Band, Jazz Band, Foundation Choir, Chamber Choir and many instrumental ensembles.

Many of our able musicians also perform regularly with other organisations such as the Halle Youth Orchestra, Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra,  Stockport Symphony Orchestra, Cheshire Choir etc.

Our exceptionally gifted musicians have been fortunate enough to perform with National ensembles such as the National Youth Choir, National Youth Jazz Orchestra and National Youth Guitar Ensemble.

The Foundation Choir won the BBC Songs of Praise Choir of the Year in 2003.  The King’s School Big Band has gained recognition for its excellence and has been frequently the only school band in the UK to be invited to play in the prestigious Wigan Jazz Festival.  The Music Department regularly gives concerts raising many thousands of pounds for local charities.

Over 400 pupils from infants to sixth form receive individual instrumental tuition from a team of almost 30 professional players and teachers.  In addition, pupils are prepared for practical and theory examinations – from Grade 1 through to the Diploma level, beyond Grade 8.
