The range of extra curricular activities distinguishes King's from other day schools. We believe strongly in the development of the whole person through many and varied activities encouraging all Sixth Form students to get involved straightaway. This helps in the making of new friends and helps to start that all important record of personal achievements that universities and employers value so highly.
Arts & Philosophical Society, European Youth Parliament, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Debating, Amnesty International, competitions in many subjects including Science, Business Studies, Economics, ICT, Mathematics, Physics and Biology, Music, Drama, Crossfire (Christian Discussion Group), Involvement in the Community, Fair Trade, Reading Group, Sports Tours and travel abroad.
Drama enjoys a high profile at King’s.
Students can follow a course of preparation of LAMDA examining and auditions and in addition, large numbers participate in our theatrical productions, acting or helping backstage with stage management, sound, props and lighting. Recent productions have included Ramayana, Alice, Cyrano de Bergerac, Candide and Zadig, Into the Woods and The Rivals. Regular trips are organised to many of the North West’s theatres and to Stratford. In addition, King’s produces high quality musicals combining the musical and dramatic talents of the pupils.
King’s is renowned for its excellence in Music.
A busy programme of concerts throughout the year features Full Orchestra, String Orchestra, Wind Band, Concert Band, Big Band, Jazz Band, Foundation Choir, Chamber Choir and many instrumental ensembles.
Many of our able musicians also perform regularly with external organisations such as the Halle Youth Orchestra, Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra, Stockport Symphony Orchestra, Cheshire Choir etc.
Our exceptionally gifted musicians have been fortunate enough to perform with National ensembles such as the National Youth Choir, National Youth Jazz Orchestra and National Youth Guitar Ensemble.
The Foundation Choir won the BBC Songs of Praise Choir of the Year in 2003. The King’s School Big Band has gained recognition for its excellence and has been frequently the only school band in the UK to be invited to play in the prestigious Wigan Jazz Festival. The Music Department regularly gives concerts raising many thousands of pounds for local charities.
Over 400 pupils from infants to sixth form receive individual instrumental tuition from a team of almost 30 professional players and teachers. In addition, pupils are prepared for practical and theory examinations – from Grade 1 through to Diploma level, beyond Grade 8.
