King’s is renowned nationally for its excellence in Sport. There is a wide range of activities for boys and girls of all abilities in competitive and non-competitive sport.
We cater for all pupils and are proud of our commitment to the concept of a broad based pyramid (maximum opportunity and mass participation) with a peak (the pursuit of excellence) – a philosophy that has been acknowledged and praised in the past by both ISI and by Sport England. Pupils and former pupils in recent years have represented their country or been National Champions in 22 different sports. On most Saturdays more than 350 pupils from all Divisions and some 25 staff are simultaneously engaged in and committed to extra-curricular sport.
King's offers both Sports Scholarships (on entry to Year 7) and the King's Elite Athlete Programme (KEAP) for Senior pupils.
Infants & Juniors
Starting in the Infants, pupils enjoy both PE and Games lessons with dedicated Sports Staff and coaches. In the Juniors, a healthy interest in sport is promoted and swimming becomes a timetabled activity. Children compete regularly (often at A, B and C team levels) against schools from the locality as well as from across the North West. Boys have regular football and rugby fixtures whilst the girls compete at netball, hockey and rounders. Cricket, cross-country, swimming, athletics and trampolining competitions allow boys and girls to represent the school at the same occasion.
Emphasis is placed both on participation and excellence, with practices held in most of the above sports at different age levels during lunch breaks or after school. King’s has been highly successful in gaining many sporting honours in both local and regional competitions. In recent years, King’s Juniors have regularly been Macclesfield Primary Schools football, swimming, netball and cross country champions; our trampolinists are National Champions in several age categories; our U11 rugby team regularly wins the AJIS competitions; and our U11 hockey and netballers have also won regional and national titles. King’s Juniors also have the opportunity to take part in an optional Sports Tour (in Year 6) to compete in The Jersey Games.
For Seniors, the range of sporting opportunities includes: athletics, basketball, biathlon, camps and expeditions, cheerleading, cricket, cross-country running, equestrian, golf, hockey, judo, netball, orienteering, outdoor activities, rugby, sailing, skiing/snowboarding, soccer, squash, swimming, taekwondo, table tennis, tennis, trampolining and volleyball.
King's has an outstanding sporting pedigree - our pupils are at the heart of the County and regional elite hockey, netball, athletics and rugby squads. King’s has been named as one of the Top 100 Cricket schools in England (The Cricketer 2016, 2017, 2018) and is in the Top 20 Rugby schools in the country (Daily Mail). In 2016, King's was crowned one of England's top rugby sevens schools after winning the overall championship at the National Warwick Sevens. King’s competed in all five age groups, from under 12s to under 16s, and won the under-15 event, reached the final in the under-13 event and won the Plate at under-14 level.
Each year, Sports Tours are scheduled for the boys (rugby, cricket or hockey) and girls (hockey and netball) with recent locations including Australia, Barbados, Canada, South Africa, Spain and Gibraltar, and future tours to South America for rugby (2019).
