German

The German Department forms part of the Modern Languages Department and  has four members of staff: Mrs Slack  (Head of German), Miss Lally, Mr Dalgleish (Head of Modern Languages) and our native German Assistant, Frau Blass.

We run a highly successful programme of extra-curricular activities. Every year we compete in the North-West Schools Debating Competition. In 2023 we were runners up.

Since trip returned to the school calendar we have taken pupils to the German Christmas Market in Aachen (December 2022), Chester German Christmas market December (2023), Berlin (July 2023) and we have an exciting new link with a Swiss school in Bülach near Zürich. Our sixth form students will visit KZU and attend school there for 2 weeks whilst living with Swiss hosts.

Our new German assistant Frau Blass regularly holds a diverse range of lectures and discussions, ranging from German Film, to Grammar, Linguistics and preparation for Oxbridge. We actively promote student-led learning by organising events that allow older pupils to engage with younger pupils in the Foundation, such as traditional dance sessions, plays and challenges.

In KS4 weekly Booster sessions aim to hone skills for the all-important GCSE exams and for Sixth Formers we have debate club every half term; we call this Kaffee, Kuchen und Krach. Our Stammtisch events for KS3 aim to recreate well know German traditions such as Karneval and Oktoberfest.
