Music

The Music Department consists of two specialist classroom music teachers, 20 peripatetic instrumental teachers, a postgraduate musician, and the Music Administrator.

Our fantastic new facilities include dedicated classroom spaces, a computer/technology lab, our own Recital Hall and a suite of practice rooms.

Music is an essential part of life for students at King’s.

Academic music is thriving and each year over 400 students take part in extra-curricular music-making, a majority of whom also have instrumental/singing lessons at King's.

Curriculum

In the Seniors, pupils in Years 7-8 enjoy weekly music lessons as part of their regular curriculum. Pupils explore a wide range of topics linked to how they themselves encounter music and music making on a regular basis.

Pupils investigate each topic in context while developing their performance, listening, analytical and composition skills. Music is a popular choice at Year 9, with many students progressing to GCSE.

The GCSE and A Level courses are not only immensely rewarding, but also hugely beneficial in helping students develop skills required for university and beyond.

Many students go on to study music at universities and conservatoires (Oxbridge, Durham, Birmingham, York, RCM, RNCM, GSMD). From university, many students go on to forge exciting careers in music.

At the same time, we are equally proud of the many former pupils for whom music is not their profession, but has nonetheless continued to be a central part of their lives.
