In Year 12, students taking three A Levels and take an IGCSE in Global Perspectives. This qualification encourages independent research, reflection and group work. These skills are invaluable as students prepare for university and the workplace.
In Year 13, the Extended Studies programme continues with around half our students taking the prestigious Extended Project Qualification, with other students choosing an additional AS subject, such as General Studies or Theatre Studies, or an alternative qualification such as Sports Leadership, the Arts Award or Japanese.
The PSHE programme covers many areas, but includes tutorials on study skills and lectures from visiting speakers on subjects and, of course, sessions on university applications, writing a personal statement, student finance, student cooking skills, etc. Sixth Form students benefit from regular excursions and field trips. Many of these trips bring a new dimension to the material on the syllabus as well as being hugely enjoyable.
Recent examples include French work experience placements and a German Exchange. In addition to curriculum visits, students are offered opportunities to attend lectures at Manchester University, visit University Open days and Oxbridge Colleges, and are provided with information on relevant events.
Opportunities abound for international travel with ‘Global Challenge’ expeditions to India, Namibia and Bolivia, plus trips to China, Russia and America in recent years.
Each year, Sixth Form students raise thousands of pounds for charity through organised events such as Big Band Concerts and the annual Fashion Show. We host a Volunteering Fair and many students volunteer as part of their participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Our participation in ‘World Challenge’ expeditions also helps to broaden students’ experiences of volunteering oversees.
