Global Perspectives

The Global Perspectives Department is made up of eight teachers from a wide range of academic disciplines, from English to Economics, and Art to Geography. The department utilises this wide array of experiences in order to deliver a Global Perspectives course to students in Year 12.

Global Perspectives is a ground-breaking and stimulating course that stretches across traditional subject boundaries and develops transferable skills. It is both cross-curricular and skills-based and taps into the way learners of today enjoy learning, including team work, presentations, projects, and working with other learners across the world.

Examination Results

Subject Content & Syllabus

Students study the Cambridge IGCSE in Global Perspectives for one-year, leading to an IGCSE qualification at the end of Year 12. Last year, 85% of all grades were A*/A.

The emphasis is on developing the ability to think critically about a range of global issues where there is always more than one point of view. Students will explore stimulating topics that have global significance. They will assess information critically and explore lines of reasoning. They will learn to collaborate with individuals from another culture, community or country, directing much of their own learning and developing an independence of thought.

Students choose to study from a range of 20 very different topics, including:

Belief Systems
Law and Criminality
Climate Change
Sport and Recreation
Biodiversity and Ecosystem Loss

Over the course of the year, students will complete three projects in their chosen topics. The focus of the course is to allow students to explore an area of interest, and create a project using research that considers different perspectives from around the world.

Monitoring & Assessment

Students are assessed in three ways for Global Perspectives: individual research reports, a group presentation project and a comprehension-style exam.

The vast majority of preparation and work for these assessments will be conducted in Global Perspectives lessons and study periods, adding up to six periods a fortnight. This means students will complete the course whilst allowing for more time to complete work for their three A Level choices.

Careers

The Global Perspectives course offered to King’s Year 12 students is designed to prepare them for the second year of A Level and degree level study.

With a strong emphasis on individual research skills, extended essay construction and presentational skills, Global Perspectives seeks to enhance students’ core learning skills that are needed in further study.

Due to the nature of the course, students can also use Global Perspectives as a way of exploring their university topic in depth.
