King’s Honours Sir David Attenborough’s 100th Birthday with Nature-Focused Learning

What a truly wonderful and inspiring day in our Infant & Junior Division to celebrate our very special Sir David Attenborough Day and to wish him a very happy birthday as he marked his 100th year.

Across every class, the children embraced the opportunity to learn more about one of the world’s most remarkable figures, whose lifelong dedication to nature, conservation, and education has inspired generations across the globe.

Throughout the day, pupils of all ages took part in a wide range of exciting activities. From creating beautiful artwork inspired by the natural world, to researching Sir David Attenborough’s extraordinary life and career, and reflecting carefully on how each of us can help care for the Earth – it has been rich and far reaching. All our classes tuned in for a special live assembly on Sir David this afternoon as well. Many classes also made thoughtful pledges for the future, showing that even the smallest actions can make a big difference when it comes to protecting our environment.

Year 1 explored composting and recycling, baked delicious banana muffins using old bananas, and enjoyed a walk around the school grounds collecting natural treasures. These were used to decorate and create nature crowns, inspiring the children to appreciate and care for the natural world.

Children in Reception danced along to the "Birthday Boogie" to mark the special occasion, and spent time creating thoughtful birthday cards. A stand-out pledge made by one of our four-year old children was: "I would give the world a hug." The children made bird feeders and proudly hung them in our Sustainability Garden to help care for local wildlife.

Our Year 6 children examined specimens in the science lab, and demonstrated their observation skills and incredible drawing and painting skills with their botanical artwork.

Mrs Cookson, Principal of our Infant & Junior Division, reflected on the significance of the celebrations and its special link with our school. She said: “Sir David’s passion for the planet and our responsibility in it resonates so powerfully with our Enquiry Curriculum leaning and its cultural messaging.

“This day reminds us that our children here at King’s are not only eager learners, but they are also growing up to be thoughtful young citizens. They are starting to care deeply about the world around them, and with this comes the importance of taking responsibility.”
