King’s Languages department is celebrating Year 13 student, Kieran Schwartz’s success, after receiving a prestigious translation award as part of a national competition run by the University of Oxford.
Kieran, who is studying A-Levels in Spanish, German and English Literature, has been awarded a Commendation for Spanish by the Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators, out of a total 22,000 students that applied. The top 5,000 entries went on to be judged by literary translators and Modern Languages students at the University of Oxford.
In a letter to King’s, Dr Charlotte Ryland of The Queen’s College, University of Oxford, said: “Commended entries show an impressive balance of accuracy and creativity, and this year our judges remarked on the extremely high standard… your student and whole Languages department should be extremely proud.”
The competition involved Kieran translating a Spanish comprehensive text into English, demonstrating his in-depth language skills and grammar.
Kieran added: “The text was written in such a way that no AI platform could have accurately translated the text, owing to the rigid gendering in the Spanish language. The task was to use gender inclusive language.
“I’m pleased I entered the competition and to have been recognised for my language skills, as I’d like to further my language studies at university and use in my career.”
