Our Sixth Form Engineering team spent a two-day residential at Liverpool University last week. The team consists of seven Year 12 A-Level Physics students, Josh, Josie, Addison, James, Adeline, Gaurav and Matthew. Students spent the two days working in the Electrical Engineering Department at Liverpool University.
As part of our Sixth Form Engineering Pathway, a group of students planning to study engineering-related courses at university are selected to form a team to work alongside local engineer John Blackwell, who owns and manages Opus Technical Ltd. John, alongside King's Head of Physics, Dr Hartnett, select a 'real life' engineering problem for the students to work together to solve. This year, students are working on the design of a mixing head that will be used in one of the Opus Technical's machines that manufacture foam, which is used in everything from fuel tanks in fighter aircraft to sofas.

In Liverpool's Engineering Department, students developed their project via research and building prototypes, and gained excellent new skills working in a university environment. The team will now write up a report on their work and will then present to a panel of engineers who will access the project via the National Engineering Development Trust (EDT) scheme whose patron is King Charles. All members of the engineering team will return to Liverpool University in the summer to graduate from the scheme.
