Last weekend, Physics A-Level students enjoyed an inspirational trip to the particle accelerator CERN.

Led by Head of Physics, Dr Hartnett, and Physics teacher Mrs Matthews, the Year 12 and 13 students flew from Manchester to Geneva. Early next day, they headed to CERN on the tram and had a morning guided visit to the control centre and the detector ALICE. This was led by a Physicist who works at CERN and it was a 'behind the scenes' tour that involved being bused over the border to France to the various locations.
After eating lunch with the scientists and engineers, students attended a lecture that James took part in and then we finished by visiting the brand new museum. After dinner at the hotel, students headed out for an evening ten pin bowling. Sunday started with a birthday cake for one of the party and then a guided tour of the Red Cross Museum and a trip into the old town and walk down to the lake to visit the very large Christmas market.

After dinner, students all headed out to see Zootopia 2 at the cinema. Monday began with a visit to the cathedral, then a boat trip across Lake Geneva to the History of Science Museum. After lunch, students enjoyed a guided tour of the United Nations building seeing a conference dealing with landmines. Finally, students returned to Geneva airport and landed back in Manchester in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The students all had a great time and found the trip both a valuable learning experience and great fun.
