Congratulations to two King’s A-Level language students who reached the final of the prestigious North Schools’ Modern Languages Debating Competition.

Held in late January, Year 13 Spanish A-Level students Kieran Schwartz and Marina Herath proudly represented King’s at the prestigious Modern Languages Debating Competition, held annually at Cheadle Hulme School. Our students debated in Spanish with great confidence and performed exceptionally well, winning both of their initial debates and achieving such high scores that they progressed through to the final.
Now in its 16th year, the competition is aimed at Sixth Form students around the north of Britain to allow them to use their MFL and debating skills and compete with other sixth formers in two preliminary rounds, with the highest-scoring students progressing through to the finals. Despite a closely fought and challenging final debate, Kieran and Marina narrowly missed out on the trophy. However, finishing in second place out of fifteen competing schools from across the North is a remarkable achievement.
Mrs Garcίa, Head of Spanish at King’s, said: “We are incredibly proud of the students’ dedication, skill and efforts. They debated incredibly well and we are so proud of them for making the final in what is a very hotly contested competition. This is the latest success for the Modern Languages department at King’s, with Kieran and another Year 13 student both receiving offers to study languages at Oxford and Cambridge Universities.”
